The findings also construct a window through which to understand other minority peoples in India, particularly the extent to which social change shapes understandings of self, a more complete understanding of the impact of India’s economic transformation on people’s lived experiences. Indeed, the study shows the label ‘Badaga’ seems to be fixed in name only, as it is primarily a process of being and becoming, open to negotiation with moment and context, and an expression of human experience in the many and varied ways it is lived―and not the simple fixed entity portrayed in the literature. Importantly, that Badaga identities are varied and fluid dispels the established standpoint in the literature of the Badagas as a homogeneous, spatially bound and static caste in the Nilgiri. The findings also revealed mechanisms which shaped identity, as well as interaction between social identity and quality of life, notably identity change as a necessary cultural innovation to buffer perceived hostility and negativity from social others. These mutually constitutive identities enabled the migrants to picture themselves appropriately in line with with their perceptions of the ideal person in rural or urban context.
In Bangalore, the migrants identified as ‘City Badaga’, an identity commitment grounded on the new social context however, in the Nilgiri they regarded themselves as ‘Nilgiri Badaga’, an identity aligned more with the rural community and its norms. The findings show the migration elicited changes in the meaning and expression of being Badaga, a shifting notion of what it meant to be a member of their caste as they engaged the city. This chapter investigates rural-to-urban Badaga migrants in Bangalore to shed light on their sense of social identity, especially with regard to migration. An increasing number are migrating from their community in the Nilgiri to the city. The Badagas are portrayed in the literature as a caste in South India with a population of 160,000 and a distinct identity.
